Microwave Meals Are Terrible For You - But Not In The Way You Think

We all know that microwave ready meals can be packed full of sugar and salt but now (cruelly) there’s one more thing to worry about in your quest for a quick dinner.

The plastic container of that 99p cottage pie contains carcinogenic toxins that can end up in your food, The Daily Mail reports.

“These toxins enter the food, then as you consume the food, they enter your body,” said nutritionist Rick Day.

“The extra toxins put extra pressure on your digestive system and on your immune system, too. They can have a detrimental effect on fertility, hormone balance, blood pressure, cardio vascular health, mood and libido also.”

The expert also explained that scientists were still unsure of the effects of microwave radiation on our health.

He said; “This can effect sleep patterns, concentration, energy levels and concentration.”

Nutritionist Lily Soutter points to the better-known issues with the content of microwave meals.

Convenience food often contains saturated fats, chemicals, preservatives, stabilizers and E colourings, which are used to boost food’s flavour and lengthen its shelf life.

What you may not know, however, is that vegetables that have been chopped and pre-prepared, like the ones in a microwave meal, aren’t as healthy as regular veg.

“Studies have shown that pre-prepared fruit and vegetable can contain up 50% less vitamin C in comparison to those which are loose and unprepared,” said Lily.
